IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is one of the world’s most trusted English proficiency exams. It evaluates a candidate’s ability to communicate in English across four key skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.
There are two types of IELTS tests:
- IELTS Academic – Ideal for students who wish to study at undergraduate or postgraduate levels or seek professional registration.
- IELTS General Training – Designed for individuals migrating to English-speaking countries or applying for work or secondary education.
IELTS is accepted by over 11,000 organizations worldwide, including universities, employers, professional bodies, and immigration authorities in countries such as the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The test is co-owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and Cambridge Assessment English.
The total duration of the exam is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes, with three modules—Listening, Reading, and Writing—completed in one sitting. The Speaking module may be scheduled separately within a seven-day window before or after the other sections.
Test results are reported as band scores from 1 to 9, with 9 being the highest level of English proficiency. The score is valid for two years from the test date.
